Instructions
This calculator will help you assess a neonate’s need for phototherapy based on
the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines [1].
- Start by entering the infant’s age at the time the bilirubin sample was taken in
the first box or click the ‘Calc’ button to calculate the age.
- Next enter the infant's bilirubin level into the second box (this calculator accepts bilirubin values between 0 - 500 μmol/L or 0 - 30 mg/dl).
- To change the units from μmol/L to mg/dL click the ‘Units’ button. The calculator
will automatically remember your preference so you won’t need to do this each time
you use the application.
- Select the gestational age of the baby in the third box.
- The calculator will then display the results indicating whether phototherapy or
exchange transfusion is currently required. The gestational age specific nomogram
[2] will also be
displayed with the result plotted on it.
- Clicking on the ‘Graph’ will display the nomogram full screen.
- Clicking the
button will reset all form fields to their default values.
