Food and drink

Eat Bryndzove Halušky or Strapačky (handmade potato dumplings served with fried onion and bacon, sometimes topped with Bryndza cheese or served with sour cabbage – vegetarians can ask for this without the bacon); Kapustnica (the national sour cabbage soup, sometimes it can have sausage too, especially after Easter fasting); Gulaš (meat stew with paprika); Korbačik, Oštiepok or Parenica (cheeses); Trdelnik (sweet pastry).
Drink homemade Slivovice Borovička (plum brandy); Tatransky Čaj (herbal liquor); Burčiak (seasonal new wine).

Accommodation

Hotels are easy to find in any city or town. Pensions can be smaller hotels or family run private guesthouses. The comprehensive (local language only) site www.ckm.sk, will help you find a bed for the night.
There are only 4 HI affiliated hostels in Slovakia and all are located in Bratislava.
Ubytovnas are a good alternative to hostels, they model the same system and many student dormitories offer cheap beds out of the school season. Check the local tourist offices or www.ckm.sk
*Camping: www.kempuj.sk (Note: This website is not fully translated into English).
